Bring star anise, cinnamon stick and 1/4 litre of water to the boil and simmer for 15 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool. In the meantime, cut figs and dates into slices. Layer figs, dates, apples, cranberries and candy in a carafe or other container (1 1/2 litre capacity). Pour spice liquid and rum into the carafe. Seal and leave to stand for 4 weeks in a cool, dark place
