Preheat oven (electric cooker: 200 °C/circulating air: 180 °C/gas: see manufacturer). Heat the clarified butter in portions in a large ovenproof pan. Brown the potato mix for about 8 minutes. Season with salt and pepper. Grate cheese.
Layer the potato mix in the pan, sprinkle with cheese and press on. Bake in the hot oven on the second rack from below for about 30 minutes. Remove from the oven. Carefully turn out the potato cake onto a baking tray lined with baking paper. Bake another 20 minutes until golden brown.
